MCB * 2050 Molecular Biology of the Cell F,W (4-0) [0.50]

This course will develop an understanding of the key concepts of the molecular biology of the cell, integrating principles of cell structure and function with the underlying molecular mechanism(s). Discussions will focus on aspects of gene regulation, genomics, cell cycle control, protein synthesis, intracellular protein trafficking and protein degradation in eukaryotic cells. Many of these concepts will be discussed in the context of how defects in cellular processes give rise to disease.

Comment :
First half of the course was a bit more difficult than the second. I would compare the first half most to MBG 2040 (lots of transcription and translation concepts, but with no calculations) and the second half to BIOC 2580 (lots of complex pathways to know step by step). I got an 84 which is on the lower end of what i usually get, but I learned alot of things that would be helpful in later courses. Its worth the struggle I would say! Since I did this during the Covid pandemic, the tutorials were just work sheets we did together in class, with the final question (marked) being completed in independant groups. ATTEMPT THE TUTORIAL BEFORE YOUR LAB SECTION. Alot of people struggled to get it done in 50 min so get most of the sheet done before hand and then check your answers during the lab/with your group members. Overall good experience, profs are helpful and nice

Although the course is quite dense and at times very dry, it is not hard to do well in. The lectures for the first half of the course (Mosser) were extremely hard to pay attention to, they were very long and boring, I often found myself skipping class and reading the textbook instead. I would say that the first half of the course is a bit more difficult in terms of understanding concepts, and the tutorial assignments were ridiculously difficult sometimes. The second half was a little easier, but that was just in terms of being able to pay attention in class and know what was happening, I still put a fair amount of time into readings and always wrote my own notes after class. The midterm was easy (Mosser), I got near perfect on it, everything that was asked was completely fair and I didn\'t think there were any tricks. but the exam was very difficult and cumulative. Overall, despite the low class average and many others saying that this course is terrible, it really isn\'t that bad as long as you keep up with it and study regularly. There\'s minimal assignments (tutorials, and weekly quizzes), a midterm and an exam.

This course is quite challenging. I found the first half of the course to be extremely boring and difficult. The focus for the first half was based on Molecular and cellular biology techniques (Southern Blots, PCR etc..) and gene cloning. The midterm was quite challenging, it was split into 25 MC questions and 25 marks for long answer, each section equally as difficult. The second portion of the course was quite interesting and focused directly on the cell and its various components. The course notes were well organized and easy to follow when it came to studying for the final exam. I found the final exam to be hard but fair! Everything that we were tested on was directly from course notes. The seminars were easy.. its literally a given 15%. Lots of memorization for this course so be prepared to work hard if you want to achieve academic success.

Overall, I absolutely hated this course. The professor was terrible. He has way too high of expectations for a second year course. The average of the class is ridiculously low (50ish%). I was not happy with how this professor presented the course.
