MCB * 4050 – Protein and Nucleic Acid Structure F (3-0) [0.50]

This course explores the relationship between the functions and the three dimensional structures of DNA, RNA and proteins. Topics covered include how these structures are determined, the principles governing their folding and architecture, why some proteins don’t fold at all, and the use of these structures to guide drug discovery. Practical skills are emphasized, including the use of bioinformatics and visualisation tools to analyse sequences and structures.

Lots of content and long assignment. The assignment was interesting but make sure to start as soon as its available. I studied a decent amount and ended with a 77%

This was an amazing class and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys BIOC/MBG/MCB type classes . The lecture slides were very clear and he doesn't expect you to know anything that isn't on the slides directly. That being said, I still recommend attending classes because he does add some helpful tips and hints for what types of things he likes to test. There was a midterm, project and final. The midterm was fair and very similar to the practice one that he gives you. The project involved him giving you a protein in the protein data base (that is new and not well characterized) and you have to do a series questions relating to this protein (everyone is given a different one). Some questions involve seeing what proteins it is related to, if it has certain structural characteristics, making different representations of Pymol ext . The project was very long, but he gives you lots of time to do it and gives load of help along the way and all the programs you have to use are covered extensively in class. I recommend starting it as early as possible since there are many parts and it is hard to predict how long each part takes until you actually do it. The final was NON CUMULATIVE which made it pretty easy, and lots of questions were related to the project you did, so as long as you took your time doing the project, you didn't really have to study those sections. Overall I really liked this class, I got a 93 and I didn't put in more effort then just going to class and reading the notes over.
