SOAN * 3120 – Quantitative Methods F (3-0) [0.50]

This course introduces basic descriptive and inferential techniques used in quantitative social research. Students will acquire the skills needed to perform basic analyses and to read the research literature. They will also acquire skills in using a standard computer package to perform data analyses. Topics include: data organization, sample description, hypothesis testing and measures of association. Note: Students who have completed any other statistics course(s) should consult with the instructor. In some instances, SOC*3120 may be waived as a departmental requirement.

Comment :
I had Hathaway for this course and though I found him to be a nice teacher, I had to go into his office hours to get him to clarify certain concepts. He's very nice and he seems to explain things better when it's one-on-one in his office hours. I didn't find the textbook too helpful when I didn't understand the questions so the prof was important! The midterms were broken down into smaller sections (3 midterms, but less to study for them) so I found that really helpful. Go to all the classes and ask any questions you have!

Comment :
This class requires a lot of extra time outside of class. The textbook was very important for this class, as I found the teacher I had to be less than helpful. Make sure to attend all classes and follow along with examples on your calculator. This course can become very difficult if you miss more than a class, as everything you learn in this class builds onto the concept before. Keeping SOAN 2120 notes were also helpful for this class, I often made reference to my class notes and even my textbook from 2120.
