PHIL * 2120 – Ethics F,W (3-0) [0.50]

Philosophical ethics is the attempt to systematize, explain, and justify the standards by which we evaluate our conduct as persons. The course may include treatment of controversial ethical issues such as abortion, euthanasia, war, and the treatment of animals and will cover many of the following questions: can we expect to find a single, universal code of ethics that applies to all human beings, or do such codes vary for each society or even for each individual? What are the roles of reason and emotion in ethics? Is morality grounded on a principle, and if so, what is it? Are there any traits of character that one must have to be a good person? Given that traditional ethical codes have been almost universally sexist, how must ethics be refashioned in order for women to achieve equal recognition? (Also offered through Distance Education format.)

Comment :
I took this through distance ed. and its really good, very easy to do well in 20% discussion mark which is really easy to get 100 in and 2 quizzes worth 10% each that are also super easy, and a short 800 paper thats 25% and a final. The content is okay not my favourite thing, but I don't like arts at all, but if I had o chose this one was my favourite. Recommend the distance ed version only though I have a bunch of friends taking the lecture one and they don't have very high opinions of it.

If you are not particularly interested in philosophy... do not take this course. I found this course really boring and dry. It wasn't particularly difficult, the content was just not something I'm interested in. This class had little open discussion which I think would have made it more interesting. The prof was a nice guy although had slightly mono tone voice. Only take this if you are interested in philosophy.

With Wetstein, this was more or less one of the best courses I have ever taken in undergrad. Not too much of a time commitment, but really engages you and makes you think.
