This multigenre course explores the relationship between literary production and political power from the emergence of U.S. culture through the long nineteenth century. Areas of focus may include national fantasy; the literatures of war, imperial expansion, captivity, and genocide; narratives of race and immigration; the cult of domesticity; and the rise of mass culture.
