Comment :
Boring course, but an easy course. Make sure to keep up with the readings in the textbook (2 chapters/week). If you do the readings the lectures aren't really necessary, she basically just reads directly off the slides that summarize the chapters and the slides are posted online. Tutorials are pretty easy marks, try to answer the questions they want you to answer and then reply to 1 or 2 other students posts and you will easily get 100% on all of them. Midterm was really simple, if you have old midterms they have many of the same questions. Final was harder, so try to get as many marks elsewhere as you can. Good mark booster.

Professor : Lisa Kowalchuk

Comment :
The DE course asks you to write 3 of 5 essays, all of which are total bull. Prof Kowalchuck is a ridiculously hard marker, I had all my essays proof read by a friend with a degree in sociology and I still couldn't manage anything over 65%. DO not take it

This course is very easy if you have Dr. Gerber. She is the one who also wrote the textbook, so missing a lecture isn't a big deal. The lectures aren't very useful, but they aren't boring either. She highlights the main points from each chapter in the lectures-one chapter per class!-but for the exam, just go over the textbook notes and you'll be fine. Just make sure you attend class on the days you have films, because she will put at least 3 questions about each film on the exam, and the tutorials are almost always about the films. She gives clicker questions in class that are indicative of her exam questions. One thing to remember: the answer is never "none of the above" and is usually "all of the above" if one (but not both!) appear as a choice. The exams are all multiple choice and are pretty straight forward. It's not necessary to do the readings each week, just as long as you finish them all at least 4 days before the exam and make good notes. The material is very easy to understand and somewhat interesting. The exam questions aren't on specific details, but rather your understanding of the concepts, so there is no need to 'memorize' anything as long as you genuinely comprehend the major points. There is a tutorial component worth 25% of your mark which involves online discussions based on specific readings in the textbook. All you need to do is make sufficient posts to earn a total of 10 points; i.e, the more posts you make, the more points you can earn. The best 5 of the 8 are only counted. All in all a very positive experience. Oh, and you don't need the Mysoclab access code. The questions on there are too specific and are basically trivia questions on 'who came up with theory x,' which she will never ask you.

not bad course studied for the midterm and got 82% question were a bit difficult....and I would much rather focus on my science courses so I did not do all the readings. Online discussions are easy marks so make sure you do them!

Very easy to understand course material. Prof Gerber clearly loves what she does and that helps to make the lectures better. The midterm was not hard at all, the final essentially lowered my mark but both tests were fair.

Easy course. Kind of boring at times, but that's what you get with intro soc. A lot of people don't really like Gerber but I think it's because she's kind of old and set in her ways and she talks about being Finnish a lot, but really she's just a nice lady. She writes fair exams and will answer all your questions very quickly. She also really cares about her students and wants to know what you get up to in the years following her class. Just keep up with the readings and it's an easy 90

I had Linda Gerber and I thought the course was good (I had a high school background already and it was MOSTLY a review). She emphasizes reading the text and understanding it. I found what helped me was linking all of the theories and concepts together as a study guide. It REALLY helps when she asks multiple choice questions that are case study. In the textbook reading...READ THE BOXES and go to see her for help!

I liked this course, but it really was a review of high school sociology. It has pretty easy exams if you go to class every day and glance at your textbook once or twice. I found Gerber cute and hilarious, although technology baffled her on numerous occasions it turned out to be to my advantage because an assignment got cancelled which would have cost me $50 to get access to because I bought my book used. So it was a good quality for me, haha!

Gerber is horrible. She started the year lecturing the wrong lecture and ended the year forgetting a page in the exam. She is the worst professor/teacher I have ever had!
