SART * 2800 – Extended Practices I F,W (0-6) [0.50]

This course introduces contemporary studio concerns with emphasis on an interdisciplinary approach to art production. Students will be actively engaged in exploring a variety of skills, materials and ideas including video, audio, artist multiples, site work and concept art. These skill sets provide a solid base for upper level courses, where thematic projects encourage students to choose the most appropriate medium for their approach beyond a singular discipline or particular medium.

this class is a great addition to take alongside your specified SART classes. I found the text book was needed in order to complete the written assignments, which there are a few (they are basically summarizing what you read and i feel that the written component of this class could be approached in a more exciting way ) however, if you can borrow the book from a friend and photocopy the short readings then dont buy it. As for the projects, there is a technician, nathan (he is so sweet), that is there to help with equipment signout, as well as technical help with the programs you will work with. There is an emphasis on interdiciplinary, though some projects require you to become familiar with equipment you may not be interested in, there is room to stretch your ideas and Laurel is open to many ideas. I felt that the critique component of this class was weak, but that is a combination of shy students and a sweet teacher. As for the professor, Laurel is a practicing artist with a wealth of information and resources to introduce you to new ideas, concepts and ART! i also loved that she shows lots of student work and i feel that this makes us strive to be even better when we see what other art students are doing. She will encourage you to develop an "art crush" over the semester and to go out and find what gets you excited! the class has a lot of opportunity to experiment and make it your own in your own way. i can say i am definitely looking forward to extended II next semester!

I liked the content of the course. You will learn to edit video and sound using Mac's, but almost by yourself. This is hard and time consuming. Anyway, you learn a lot about process, conceptual art... and thinking!!! I didn't like the professor, I found her a little rude and I didn't like how she teachs. A lot of watching other artists work, but a little feedback. But I think the course is necessary for any artist who wants to do contemporary installations and so on.

I really enjoyed this course and has challenged me to think conceptually about my ideas and changed the way I think about art. Anyone in the studio art program should definitely take this course because really it was a lot of fun! Don't think that this course is all about video art, it isn't and has opened doors to other possibilities of what art can be.
