PHIL * 1010 – Introductory Philosophy: Social and Political Issues F,W (3-0) [0.50]

Very unstructured class - never any lectures or learning.. every class students shared their opinions about certain moral or political issues, but we actually never learned anything in class about theorists or proper argumentation, but were expected to know how to construct a proper argument with no fallacies in major assignments. And the textbook is a waste of money because we never got tested on it - we had 2 random papers again about your opinions, with vague expectations. Easy because we never did anything, but extremely frustrating because we had high expectations for the papers - but were taught absolutely nothing.

Its actually pretty difficult to understand all of the content and concepts at first (first half of the semester) but then it moves into more well-known issues (feminism, gay rights, etc). The prof really knows what she's talking about and always gets the conversation and debate going. All-in-all I enjoyed the course.

Honestly the worst class offered at the university. There is so much reading to do for every class and there are 2 major writing assignments which you normally do poorly on because you don't have a clue what any of the reading means. The prof (Lampert) doesn't post anything on courselink so you have to go to the lectures and you have to pay attention or you will miss whatever it is he is rambling on about. Horrible lecture, I advise that you avoid it unless mandatory!

I really enjoyed this course. Hacker-Wright was a great prof and he made lectures really interesting and there was a lot of class discussion. The readings that he assigned weren't too dry but some got to be long. The midterm was basically memorization of terms and facts (super easy) and the final was similar. In seminar we had to do concept mapping which wasn't bad as long as you took the TA's advice. My TA let us submit the concept mapping assignements for feedback before he marked them. I learned lots and did well!

Worst course I have ever taken. It was very disorganized and the TA I had was the hardest marker on the essays. The prof was a much more fair marker as the final (essay) increased my mark by far.
