MBG * 4110 – Advanced Concepts in Genetics F (3-0) [0.50]

This course presents classical non-Mendelian phenomena, including analysis of chromosome breakage, transposition, imprinting and paramutation. Modern advances in gene regulation via epigenetic phenomena will be a central theme, focusing on chromatic remodeling, gene silencing and RNA interference as they pertain to organism development, with an emphasis on plants. Comment :
This course is going to cover lots of concepts about genomics not covered in other classes. The materal is really interesting. There are three midterms for this class of equal weighting, with a presentation / 2 page paper review on an article that Yankolov assigns you. For the presentation, he won\'t grade you below a 75%. The midterms are a different story - two versions with entirely different questions, usually 2 open ended long answer questions per section of the units covered. The fill in the blanks are the most vague, frustrating questions as the language provided gives very little insight as to what he is talking about, or wants as an answer. Overall, pray you get a midterm with the material you studied the hardest otherwise you will probably fail as he looks for very specific points to get the marks - he does not give part marks for answers to part of a question. Staying on top of readings is necessary, otherwise you will likely fail.

Comment :
Very interesting and a great introduction to research not typically a part of mainstream molecular biology, particularly epigenetics. The quizzes were very fair and actually focused on understanding of the material rather than memorizing all the facts. The final was tough but the quizzes prepared you well for it. Highly recommended for everyone in MBG or just interested in Genetics.

Really interesting, fun course! Plus Professor Colasanti is such a nice guy. He's really good Prof and he makes this a good course to take. Biweekly quizzes, a group presentation and a final. No midterm.
