ENGL * 1200 – Reading the Contemporary World F,W (3-0) [0.50]

This course, which is designed primarily for those not planning a specialization in English, introduces students to literary texts and persuasive forms of writing, bringing to the fore some of the links between language and contemporary social and political issues. Course materials will represent diversity in terms of national origins, gender, race, and class. The course emphasizes the use of figurative language as well as the development of students’ critical reading and writing skills. Students planning to major or minor or pursue an area of concentration in English must take ENGL*1080 and ENGL*2080, but may also take ENGL*1200 and count it as an elective lecture. (Also offered in Distance Education format.)

This course is the worst one I have taken so far. It is a little time-consuming because there are at least three assignments to write each week but they are all fairly easy. It\'s the bullshit content for me. The books are still meaningful and important to understand. But this course has been infected by woke culture. All you write about day and night is gender/sexuality, antiracism, and all the things the far left love to talk about. The arguments are supposed to be based on personal opinions; however, it\'s just teaching you how to think, and it indoctrinates students.

A mindbogglingly boring course. One essay (draft and final version) was worth 50% of your grade. All readings were long-form non-fiction articles. The lectures were atrociously uninteresting.

This course had a lot of reading. Unless you really like reading or english I wouldn't suggest taking it. The books we read were Dracula (terribly boring), Dorian Gray, St, Joan and Harry Potter I. You could probably get away without reading the books and just listen to the prof or use spark notes. Not difficult but just time consuming to read all the books

This was a fairly easy course that I took to fulfil my arts degree requirements. Didnt require alot of work- only one essay, midterm and final. To do well you do have to read the texts, but I found them fairly interesting. I missed probably half the lectures and still received a good grade, as the lecture notes are posted online.

This is a really fun course. There are only a few assignments and the TAs prove to be really helpful, so if you want to do well ask if they can review your work before you submit it.
