ENGG * 4120 – Engineering Systems and Computing Design IV F,W (3-5) [1.00]

This is the capstone design course for the Engineering Systems and Computing program. Teams normally of 3-4 students apply engineering analysis and design principles to a problem involving control system, computer hardware or computer software technology. A completely specified solution at the level of preliminary or final design is required, including assessment of socio-economic and environmental impact. This is a small group design that requires reports and a poster presentation to a professional standard. Ethics and legal case studies relevant to professional engineering practice are presented during the lectures.

Comment :
41X is basically as hard as you make it. Look for good, hard working group members who have similar ideas and work ethic. Also choosing the right prof as an Advisor is basically the key to doing well in this course, as your advisor does the marking for your reports. Advisor is literally just an advisor, they can give you advice but they will not do your project for you. Try to find a middle ground of an advisor thats helpful but not too demanding. Choose a design that will be interesting and build a prototype so that people are interested in it on design day. Dont request more than $1000 from lab fund as you will probably be turned down and then youll have no money for your prototype. The final exam with law and ethics is boring to study for but its important for the PEO exam you will take later. There seemed to be a kind of lack of structure in this course which was unexpected as it is your final design course. Vague guidelines on what to actually do, setup weekly meetings with your advisor to get started on the right track.
