ENGG * 3100 – Engineering and Design III W (3-2) [0.75]

This course combines the knowledge gained in the advanced engineering and basic science courses with the design skills taught in ENGG*1100 and ENGG*2100 in solving open-ended problems. These problems are related to the student’s major. Additional design tools are presented, including model simulation, sensitivity analysis, linear programming, knowledge-based systems and computer programming. Complementing these tools are discussions on writing and public speaking techniques, codes, safety issues, environmental assessment and professional management. These topics are taught with the consideration of available resources and cost.

The whole \'design\' course is all about writing reports, which is no fun. You don\'t have to make a prototype, just describe what is would be like in writing. This does help you\'re writing and researching skills though. Very abstract course, which wasn\'t really useful, lots of approximating and making things up. Get easy marks with quizzes and website updates. Lectures are so boring and not really worth going if you have a busy schedule, maybe about 10% of the class shows up on Fridays, everyone only shows up on clicker quiz days. Honestly, the best group members to look for are those with good writing and researching skills. Reports seem to be marked pretty easily. I think a lot of bias exists, as reports are marked by the TA and prof in your lab section, so keep on goof terms with them and include exactly what they want in the reports. It is probably better to go for a small scale design over large scale, so that the fine details can be determined.

This course is a lot different than previous design courses. You will choose to \'design\' a solution to a real world problem, but the problem with this is that the design is often very large scale or unfeasible. Design work in this course will very rarely be a physical prototype but rather the marks come from different design reports like cost analysis and technical memos. So get ready for a lot of writing. The design often seems too theoretical, so try to go for a practical but simple design, otherwise you will spend too much time researching. Designing this theoretical product will require a TON of estimating, so research and writing skills are really what youre looking for in group members. Iclicker quizzes in class, you also have to make small changes to your groups website to outline your design. Most reports are marked fairly easily. Overall a very bland and theoretical course, helps solidify other \'boring\' parts of the design process which are actually important in real life.
