CHEM * 2880 – Physical Chemistry F (3-1.5) [0.50]

This survey course is intended for students who are not specializing in chemistry or chemical physics. Topics include basic thermodynamics, chemical equilibrium, macromolecular binding, chemical kinetics, enzyme kinetics, transport processes, colligative properties and spectroscopy. This course describes macroscopic observable properties of matter in terms of molecular concepts.

Don\'t take this course. Ask your advisor to take thermodynamics instead. This course will probably destroy your average.

Don\'t take this course as an elective. If you can\'t escape it I would definitely recommend the textbooks which really helped me personally especially the one with problems and solutions. You get a quiz every week based on the chapter covered as well as 2 midterms and 1 final. My only advice is practice, a LOT

Took this course as an elective. The Prof (Dr. Jones) didn't teach it extremely well in my opinion. Had extensive notes that got filled in during class but were not helpful at all. Textbook was the worst textbook I have ever encountered. First midterms average came to 46-49% and second midterm was probably around the same. Half the class had dropped it at that point. Three weekly quizes on material that was going to be covered NEXT lecture, those had a failing average as well. Not saying its impossible to achieve a successful mark in this class but the way it was taught and the problems that were given made it much more difficult than it should've been. Practice problems and self-instruction such as online or other textbooks are the key to improving. I dropped the class after getting a 70% on the first midterm and a 60 on the second with 50% on the quizzes. Was going to try and re-take the class F-11 semster until i saw Dr. Jones was teaching it again. Would not reccomend unless you MUST take it.

Contrary to popular belief, this course is actually not that hard. Learn the material yourself online and through other sources. The textbook sucks, and the notes have too much info that you constantly have to organize and weed through. Once you get the main ideas though, you're good to go. Do TONS of practice problems and don't neglect problem sets as there are virtually no sample problems done in class or tutorials to the same degree that they appear on the exam.
