Professor : DeLaat

Comment :
This class is a bit of a step up from CHEM*1040. It involves more in-depth calculations and there is a bit more new content, but a lot of it is from high school. I took it in W16, the prof was alright, but he basically had us make our notes on our own from the textbook and then he would just run over examples in lecture. The labs seemed scary but were actually fine! Also if you do enough practice questions and old exams before the midterm and exam, you\'ll find they aren\'t too bad. And I recommend Sapling, as it is extra practice and a free 10% off your midterm and exam!

Comment :
I was originally in DeLaat\'s class, and ended up switching to Jones\'s section. I didn\'t like DeLaat\'s structure (if you could call it that). He expected students to ask questions in class to base the discussion on, he said he wouldn\'t \"lecture\". When no one had questions, he pulled out a pen and note pad on doc cam to go over stuff. Seemed really disorganized and clearly didn\'t put much thought into \"lectures\".

Professor : Jones

Comment :
Do not choose Jones. Although interesting, her lectures are difficult to follow (she presents material fluidly, but is completely disjoint from the actual notes provided). Great if you can learn quickly as she speaks. Otherwise, work hard using other resources (SLGs, textbook, other prof's notes, friends). Sapling/OWL once again is a piece of cake. Labs are more interesting. Midterm still covers a lot of material. This is generally easier than CHEM1040 in terms of concepts and amount of new material.

Comment :
Horrible prof, don't sign up for the course if he is teaching. Midterm material was stuff he made up and the final was the most ridiculous thing I have ever written (consisted of questions we had never gone over before or seen). The course material isn't actually that hard, but this prof doesn't teach it well and also doesn't follow the textbook so it makes it very difficult to study.

This course is a lot easier than it's predecessor, CHEM*1040. If you study well for the midterm and final, you should do well. The material isn't as difficult, most of the year is spent on thermo, which isn't too difficult. Memorization plays a bigger role in this course than in 1040 because there are a lot of equations. Labs are just like 1040 and if you do well on the really depends on how nice your TA is or if you prepared for them. Sapling is just as easy. DeLaat was an excellent prof, which is why I think this course seemed easier. He does lots of examples in class and his notes are clear. He seems very passionate which also helps keep your focus. Note: Share the cost of a textbook with a few friends, don't waste your money buying your own for this course.

Comment :
This course is so easy, a lot more than 1040. Make sure you get Baker as a prof thoughand you don't even rally need to memorize every formula just use dimensional anaylsis (convert units). Final was super easy like 30 mins before the final i looked over a 2007 final and more than 2/3 of it was the same, like the long answer section I worked my way backwards from the final answer

This is basically a repeat of grade 12 material... so as long as you are able to comprehend at a grade 12 level this shouldnt be a problem. Just make sure you go to class!

A lot of information to remember, at least 15 complex formulas to memorize. Difficult course, but easier then 1040 and if you keep up with readings, and attend lecture you can get a good mark.

Professor : Lori Jones/ Mark Baker

Comment :
First half of the course is mostly high school thermodynamics. I went to Lori Jones for first half, and found her notes to be rather lengthy. Also in her lecture you are expected to copy down the examples, and about 50% of them you do on your own (which is rather annoying). Second half of the course I went to Mark Baker's lecture. He posts all of his notes online, and they are very straight forward and to the point. However they contain many errors that he doesn't seem to fix year after year. Baker is very helpful with preparing you for the final, shows past questions, etc. Course is easier than 1040, more math based. Go to Mark Baker's lecture.

Much slower paced than 1040. It is more math based rather than conceptual knowledge. There are 4 quizzes and weekly homework assignments. If you made it through 1040 doing well is 1050 should be easy.

Loads easier than 1040. also it seems like there is less material to cover. Same textbook as 1040. If your prof is Baker, hes the best! Great notes, funny, and gets his points across clearly. Keep up with online assignments, quizzes and labs and you'll be fine.

Not a bad course overall! Much easier than 1040. Even easier if you can get a hold of copies of old midterms or exams but even so the exams aren't too difficult.

Unlike others have been saying, I thought that this course was harder than 1040. I did not do well in this at all and all of the profs are horrible. Baker fools around too much and his accent drives you mad. The final was a bunch of crap. I went to 4 lectures during this semester. Teach yourself I guess?
