BIOL * 2250 – Biostatistics and the Life Sciences W (3-2) [0.50]

This course in biostatistical methods will emphasize the design of research projects, data gathering, analysis and the interpretation of results. Statistical concepts underlying practical aspects of biological research will be acquired while working through the process of scientific enquiry. Weekly computer laboratory sessions will focus on practical data visualization and statistical analysis using computer statistical packages. Simple parametric and nonparametric methods are reviewed, followed by more advanced topics that will include some or all of the following: two factor ANOVA and multiple regression, and introductions to discriminant analysis, cluster analysis, principle components analysis, logistic regression, and resampling methods. Boring beyond belief! Both profs are very eccentric but this does little to liven up the material. The course is somewhat easier than STAT*2040 and the midterm and final are both open book. Assignments are useful for understanding the material but are a bit tedious.

A typical stats course...If you didn't enjoy/do well in the first stats course, this one may be a bit easier because the statistical tests are not covered in as much detail. The course mainly focuses on how to apply the tests to experiments, which is really helpful for future lab courses (especially if you are in ecology, where most of the core courses are very stats-driven!) When I took it all tests were open book and, if you were prepared, not difficult. The hardest component was the labs, which were very long, but the majority of marks came from the midterm/final. Recommended if you intend to do more lab-based courses!
