BIOC * 3560 – Structure and Function in Biochemistry F,W (3-0) [0.50]

An interesting class with a ton of content and detail! Dr. Coppolino was incredibly helpful in class and during office hours and his midterm was very fair, although difficult. The midterm was worth 40% and the final worth 60%. Dr. Kimber also tested his content fairly, and I enjoyed his weird comments during lecture. ("Glucagon is insulin's evil twin...") The textbook was useful but gave more detail than necessary, as the slides were very complete. EVERYTHING on the lecture slides is important, as this class involves a lot of memorization!

Really interesting class!! there is lots of material but the exams are very fair. The proff is very helpful and willing to help!

I didn't enjoy this course. The prof seriously needs to invest in a new laser pointer. Spent every lecture trying to find where he was pointing and would miss the discussion on that topic. I thought that the slides were hard to follow, disorganized. Many others enjoyed the class though, so don't be too discouraged.

Great course. Material is very easy to understand and is presented in a clear manner. Lots of memorizing of cycles, which seems scary at first but its really not. Midterm was fair and the final was even easier. Get the textbook, they use figures from lecture straight from it and it helps a lot.

Much more interesting than second year biochem. The material has more practical applications and relevance in other courses. Both profs are good teachers and they post their notes online. I would recommend going to class as there is a lot discussed there that is not in the notes and Graether draws a lot of diagrams that simplify much of the material. The midterm was tough and the final was fair though you need to study for both.

All you need is the lecture and supplementary notes..and you will do pretty well if you keep up both profs are pretty awesome...I love profs who reply to emails with any questions so you don't have to waste time going to their office.

Boring. But good profs

Coppolino kicks ass and was probably one of, if not, the best prof I have ever had both in terms of his lecture and the notes/resources he provided for us. His midterm was very fair, if you know your stuff you did well, if you slacked off it showed. Second part gets much harder and complex but also less interesting. If you enjoyed and did well in second year BIOC expect the same for this course.

First half is great- super easy and Coppolino is amazing. He writes really fair exams and wants everyone to do well. Second half... well shit hit the fan for me. Study every single tiny pathway they give you and every little enzyme. Second half is really boring and much more like 2nd year biochem. Overall though, much better than 2nd year

Tests are very fair, if you study you will do well. First half was interesting and fun (could be because Coppolino was an amazing teacher). Second half contained much more dry material, quite boring.

Great Course! Even though the material did come to a large amount of complexity by the end, the professors were great and the slides were well done. Also the exams and midterms were very fairly written. I recommend going to the lectures though, because the slides do leave out some details that make the notes must easier to understand. The professors give lots of resources (specific readings, problems sets and old midterms)

Way easier than second year biochem.

First part of the class was interesting (mostly had to do with haemoglobin structure and function), and the lecture slides were all posted online so you didn't have to go to class. The second part of the class was extremely boring and you have to memorize all of the enzymes and intermediates of many metabolic pathways. However, if you're good at memorizing and enjoy biochemistry it's not hard to do well. One midterm, one exam, both were fairly easy.
